On June 19, a man dressed as a Federal Express delivery person came to the Salas home and shot Judge Ester Salas’ husband and son. Reportedly, Salas’ son and husband answered the door together. Roy Den Hollander shot both of them before running away.
Salas’ 20-year-old son Daniel Anderl was killed. Her husband Mark Anderl survived and is still recovering in the hospital after surviving multiple gun shots.
Judge Salas—who didn’t go to the door because she was in the basement cleaning up for her son’s birthday—was unharmed.
The gunman was a 72-year-old proud “anti-feminist” lawyer. He shot himself in Rockland, NY on July 20th, one day after the shootings. Hollander is a suspect in a California killing involving another lawyer. Hollander reportedly had a list of other people he was targeting in his car.
On Monday in a nine minute video, Salas asked for nationwide protection for judges. She said, “In my case, this monster knew where I lived and what church we attended and had a complete dossier on me and my family. My son's death cannot be in vain, which is why I am begging those in power to do something to help my brothers and sisters on the bench.”
Salas stated, "I know this is a complicated issue, and I don’t pretend to know or have all answers, but together we can find a way. Let’s commence a national dialogue, let’s work collaboratively to find a solution that will safeguard the privacy of federal judges. Let me be clear and tell you firsthand this is a matter of life and death. And we can’t just sit back and wait for another tragedy to strike.”
Judge Salas is the first Hispanic woman to serve as a federal judge in New Jersey.
Daniel, her son, would have returned to college at Catholic University of America this fall.
