On Thursday, Donald Trump won and lost in two Supreme Court rulings.
Trump won when the Supreme Court decided that the U.S. House cannot look at Trump’s taxes. Trump has spent the last three years claiming he can’t show Americans his taxes because he is under audit. Trump still refuses to provide proof of an I.R.S. audit.
Trump lost when the Supreme Court ruled that Cyrus Vance, Manhattan's chief prosecutor, can access Trump's business records and tax returns. This is a huge defeat for Trump and thwarts his efforts to hide is financial information from New York state investigators. The court rejected Trump’s assertion that he enjoys absolute immunity from investigation while in the White House.
Vance is conducting a criminal investigation into Trump’s hush-money payments to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal. He has a long history of aggressively pursuing fraud and white-collar crime. Vance is digging deep into the Trump family business.
Vance stated that this ruling is a, “tremendous victory for our nation's system of justice and its founding principle that no one — not even a president — is above the law." He continued, “Our investigation, which was delayed for almost a year by this lawsuit, will resume, guided as always by the grand jury’s solemn obligation to follow the law and the facts, wherever they may lead.”
Wherever They May Lead
Wherever they may lead indicates that Trump’s fortune could be in jeopardy.
Recall that Michael Cohen stated, "It was my experience that Mr. Trump inflated his total assets when it served his purposes, such as trying to be listed among the wealthiest people in Forbes, and deflated his assets to reduce his real estate taxes.”
If Vance is investigating tax fraud, this could spell financial disaster for Trump and his three eldest children.
Trump Tweeted, “The Supreme Court sends case back to Lower Court, arguments to continue. This is all a political prosecution. I won the Mueller Witch Hunt, and others, and now I have to keep fighting in a politically corrupt New York. Not fair to this Presidency or Administration!”
Presumptive Democratic Presidential Nominee Joe Biden has been already making this election about corruption. He was quick to capitalize on Trump’s loss today.
Biden Tweeted, “As I was saying @realDonaldTrump, you want to talk about corruption? I’ve released 21 years of my tax returns — release yours or shut up.”
