On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court voted in a unanimous ruling that states can insist that ALL members of the Electoral College support the winner of the popular vote.
The justices rejected the claim that electors have the right under the Constitution to defy their states and vote for the candidate of their choice.
Monday’s ruling prevents faithless electors.
What Are Faithless Electors?
They are a member of the United States Electoral College who does NOT vote for the candidate who they pledged to vote for.
Thirty-two states already required their electors to vote for the winner of their states popular vote. Eighteen states have no such requirement.
Supreme Court Justices all expressed concern that electors could be bribed, especially by the losing party in a close election.
