UPDATE: Trump commuted Roger Stone’s prison sentence on Friday night.
@DanRather Tweeted, “News of Donald Trump commuting Roger Stone's sentence proves what was obvious since the beginning. The pledge to "drain the swamp" was about as real as Trump University. Many will conclude Stone had a lot to say to implicate Trump, didn't say it, and was rewarded accordingly.”
Stone was sentenced to 40 months in prison for witness tampering, making false statements and obstruction in February of 2020 after a jury found Stone guilty of the all seven felonie charges in November of 2019.
Stone is scheduled to report to prison serve his sentence on Tuesday, but it looks like Trump may pardon or commute his sentence. On Friday, a D.C. court denied Stone’s request to avoid prison due to coronavirus.
Fox News anchors Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson reportedly advocated for Trump to pardon Stone.
Stone has been in bed with conservative media groups and pundits since he helped Richard Nixon get elected in the 1970s.
Attorney General William Barr allegedly did not want Stone to be pardoned.
There is speculation that Barr has a pre-signed pardon agreement in his possession from Trump. If this is true, then any legal maneuvers to prevent Trump from using his pardon powers in the future could put Barr’s pre-signed pardon in jeopardy.
Fun Fact: Barr injected himself into the Stone case when he withdrew the recommended sentence for Stone leading to four U.S. prosecutors resigning in protest.
Trump did pardon commute Stone’s sentence and this could lead to future court challenges of Trump’s pardon power.
