There have been multiple incidents of police brutality caught on camera during protests over the past week as the world mourns the killing of George Floyd. Everyone with a camera phone is filming and it’s holding bad police officers accountable. Everyone except Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio.
Jordan claimed during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on policing practices that, “They are the officers who protect the Capitol, who protect us every single day. They’re the officers who rush into the Twin Towers on 9/11, they’re the officers in every one of our neighborhoods, in every one of our communities, every day, every night, every shift they work, they put their lives on the line to keep our community safe. Guess what Americans also get, guess what else they understand, they know it is pure insanity to defund the police and the fact that my Democrat colleagues won’t speak out against this crazy policy is just that frightening.”
Recall that NBC News reported that three former wrestlers were sexually assaulted and that Jordan knew about it, but failed to report any of the sexual assaults. Jordan denied knowing anything about the abuse but Shawn Daily disputes Jordan’s claim.
Also recall the disturbing incident that went viral last week after two Buffalo police officers were caught on video shoving down an elderly man.
Video shows an elderly man tried to speak with officers. Then one officer shoves him with a baton while another officer pushed him hard using his hand. The man is then seen staggering back, falling and hitting his head on the sidewalk. A loud crack can be heard as his head hits the pavement.
Another disturbing aspect was seeing all the police officers, who swore an oath to protect and serve, look the other way as the elderly man lay bleeding on the pavement. This is reminiscent of Jordan’s own actions when Daily states that Jordan failed to report the rapes of three innocent boys. Jordan reportedly looked the other way.
After public outrage, two Buffalo police offices were fired. Both men were then charged with felony assault. Other officers resigned in protest—not for the injured elderly man—but for the police officers who battered the 75-year-old.
Most Americans believe the Buffalo police officers’ resignations were good riddance, but not Jordan. He is choosing to align himself with police even in the face of overwhelming video evidence that proves that not all police are heroes.
There are many upstanding police officers, but that doesn’t mean Americans are willing to look away from police who abuse citizens.
This leaves many wondering if Jordan just wants to suck up to police to avoid being charged himself?
