Grassroots Democratic activists took on the Putin/Trump disinformation campaign one post at a time. Resisting was a choice that many made as they were forced to combat the Trump disinformation campaign.
Resisters united in their bid to elect Joe Biden and flip the Senate Blue.
Grassroots Resistance groups like #Dems4USA, #ONEV1 and #BeTheChange4USA sprang up across social media. Groups like these donated their time to engage politically with Americans. They organized local town meetings, increased voter registration drives and organized protests. They have been highly effective in reaching and persuading undecided or disillusioned voters in key battle ground states.
Resistance groups worked together to make decisions about which candidates to endorse, to develop policy platforms and to get out the vote. They also partnered with other organizations such as the #MeToo movement, #BlackLivesMatter, the LGBTQ community and the NAACP.
The Resistance became a force to be reckoned with as evidenced by Joe Biden’s win.
Now Resistance groups are working their counteroffensive strategies as they reach beyond political paid advertisements to connect with voters personally. They have redefined what an effective campaign looks like.
2016 Putin/Trump Disinformation Campaign
Recall the thousands of Putin/Trump troll bots that flooded social media with lies and disinformation supporting Trump while trashing Clinton during the 2016 presidential election.
Putin-backed trolls worked by creating division between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton supporters, spreading lies about Clinton’s health and inflating the “Oh but her emails” nonsense.
Many patriotic Americans realized that action needed to be taken to combat Russian election interference sparking the rise of the Resistance movement.
Dedicated Resistance Leaders Speak Out
Three dedicated leaders were kind enough to share what inspired them to donate their time to the Resistance movement on social media:
@Vegix of #BeTheChange4USA says, “The BeTheChange4USA community is focused on both virtual and real world activism to bring about a blue tsunami in 2020. We are at the nexus in our country's history where sweeping reform can happen as many more are aware of the consequences of regression or complacency. Harnessing this momentum to bring about a brighter tomorrow is our primary mission and we're making progress each and every day!”
@BigPixieKiss of #Dems4USA states, “We are coming together with a common goal to reclaim what American has lost. We, at Dems4USA, are focused on supporting those candidates who share our values and will work to restore the goodness, the core of America. We are a loving caring people who believe in equality for all. We share the best, and the worst, in an effort to fully educate our fellow Americans to the plight of so many among us. Our eyes have been opened and we can no longer be blinded by complacency or ignorance of the reality of so many of our fellow Americans, our fellow humans. An organized group is essential to expanding and amplifying messages, to educating all Americans, to educating the world. An activist group like Dems4USA is an excellent tool to spread messages, to support candidates, to educate people, to bring about change in America for the betterment of all. There is truly power in numbers.”
@SadieMaeTN of #ONEV1 says, “ONEV1 is a diverse group, made up of many people, with strong voices for many different causes. Election security, healthcare, LGBTQ issues, gun reform, our environment, immigration, criminal justice, women’s issues and vets. We reach people on Twitter with our tweets and they want to know what we do. When we explain this to them, they say they’re going to reach out into their community to see what they can do to make a change. It starts on the local level, then state and then federal. We encourage them to register voters, phone/text bank, mail postcards, volunteer for a campaign and donate. We think the information we provide them will help them to become an activist, a voter and excited to be part of the election process.”
If the Democratic party decides to work more closely with groups like these, they could ensure that these groups remain politically active through 2024. Working together to fire up and register voters who may not typically vote.
